Sent vs. Delivered: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between sent and delivered is that sent refers to the act of sending a message, while delivered indicates that the message has been received by the recipient.

Before we move to more differences, let’s first understand Sent and Delivered:

  • Sent: When you send a message, it means that you have composed a message and clicked on the send button. The message has been dispatched to the recipient’s device, but it does not necessarily mean that the message has been received by the recipient.
  • Delivered: When a message is delivered, it means that it has been received by the intended recipient’s device. This does not necessarily mean that the recipient has seen or read the message, only that it has been successfully delivered to their device.

Now, let’s get to Sent vs Delivered:

Major differences between Sent and Delivered

Sent Delivered
Sent indicates that the message has been dispatched. Delivered indicates that the message has been received by the recipient’s device.
Sent is a status that occurs when the message is sent. Delivered is a status that occurs when the message has reached the intended recipient’s device.
Sent does not guarantee that the recipient has received the message. Delivered indicates that the message has reached the intended recipient’s device.
Sent does not necessarily mean that the message will be delivered successfully. Delivered confirms that the message has been successfully delivered to the intended recipient’s device.
Sent is a notification to the sender that the message has been sent. Delivered is a notification to the sender that the message has been successfully delivered to the recipient’s device.

So, these are the main differences between the entities.
